I just finished reading "Bird of Paradise" and I am rather at a loss for words ... But I will try: engaging, moving, suspenseful, intelligent, compelling, sensitive, intense, addictive. A finely-wrought mystery which steadily builds to a tense, white-knuckle conclusion that grabs you for the wild hundred-page final ride and doesn't let go.The story was clearly carefully thought-out; this was no "Write your novel in 30 days!". The dialogue is smart and well-crafted. The author shows a deep understanding of human-nature, telling a tough but tender story of loyalty, love and friendship. The mirroring of the two parallel love stories is beautifully done, laced with the bond of creativity, the joy of music, the excruciating pain of addiction, the wounds of the past, and the erotic tension of unspeakable love. The characters are scarred, unique, believable, endearing, flawed, and drawn with psychological depth and truth. I miss them already ... I can only hope that this is the first of a series. More, please!

Bird of Paradise edition by GJ Paterson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book was a roller coaster ride with all the elements of a grear story, action suspence, and great characters.
This is definitely the winner for me in this category. Finally, someone wrote a real rock 'n' roll band in a m/m romance! I'm so sick of all those "boy bands" pretending to be rock bands! Two love stories run parallel in the story a self destructive one between two band members, and a budding (still in denial) one between two detectives, all four of them thrown together by a child kidnapping case. Both the mystery and romance plots are well thought out and well researched, excellent use of flashbacks and back stories, it's such a joy and thrill to follow, from start to finish.
"Bird of Paradise" is a suspenseful and intelligently written mystery which held my attention through to the end. The characters are well-rounded, with surprising depth and charm. The story of love and trust that grows between them shines. I hope the author writes more about them.
I was especially impressed because I knew that this was the writer's first published novel. The story-telling was consistent and attention-holding. Also, the ending was not what I expected, and I can usually predict outcomes.
I read the first five pages and wasn’t sure and next thing I knew I couldn’t put it down. Brutally honest, emotionally compelling, this novel pairs two economically and socially disparate relationships and reveals that at the baseline we all experience and suffer the same uncertainties. The plot line makes for a compelling device to strip away surface protections and forces an exploration of deeper truths. Written with an attention to detail and appropriately graphic color it has the power to make the reader feel that to look away would be a dishonesty and a betrayal of an anguishing journey that must be finished.
I couldn't be prouder of a childhood friend who as written an outstanding novel that successfully weaves intrigue and action into a story that is spellbinding from the first page to the last!
I hope that this is not the last we hear from this outstanding Author.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this book up, but I really enjoyed it a lot. Allyn was everything I wanted him to be, and the other characters turned out to be happy surprises. The story was gripping and I had trouble putting it down. The romantic relationships were believable, and the action was exciting. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone!
I am normally leery of fantasy with a modern setting, but this book was very well written with believable characters. I particularly enjoyed the interaction between the two musicians, as well as the two police officers. Well done!
I've gone back and re-read "Bird of Paradise" and feel I should clarify some things. It's not a fantasy in the sense of magic being real. However, the description of how the music works between Allyn Sterling and Derek Quinn is, to me, a description of how "magic" should make a person feel.
The author has a firm understanding of human nature, and obviously knows how performing can truly be magical both for the audience and the performer. It is that which I interpreted as magic, not any presentation in the book as real magic. I'm probably not saying this the right way but to me the whole feel of the book is magical, even though the story is firmly rooted in reality.
