Alongside Banker to the Poor, what I would have liked to read when I was starting out (as a social entrepreneur) was a confession of an intimate, messy, evolving relationship with capitalism, from someone who started their own business not because they wanted to but because they had to. Someone who wasn’t an economist or a banker, someone unqualified to be an entrepreneur by anything but desperation. I would’ve liked to read something ragged and personal by somebody who had no idea what they were doing, but was driven to do it anyway.
So that’s this book.

I'm not the kind of person who randomly posts review. This is my first book review. But I feel driven to post here. I'd like to give a few other disclaimers first:
1. I am a POCA Tech student. And I cannot believe how lucky I am.
2. I've met Lisa a couple of times and knew she had a book coming out and I was ecstatic to see what it was all about. I was incredibly impressed by Lisa's sincerity, passion, and vision.
3. After purchasing the book (yes, I am a certified Amazon purchaser) I read it in one sitting. OK, I read it twice.

So here's what I have to say:
I wanted to study acupuncture for years, but the dollars and sense just didn't, you know, make sense. Coming out with six figures of debt was daunting. By and large, from talking with my acupuncture providers, I understood, you don't do this work to make big $$. You do it because you believe you can make a difference and really help people. 3000+ years of this medicine bear this out. It's wonderful and mysterious, but it works.

A couple of years ago I was, by chance, introduced to Community Acupuncture. And no, I'm not the "woo woo" sort. I'm pretty pragmatic. But it was so affordable and healing. Geez. I had to go after figuring out now to do this, and I did.

And now, reading Lisa's journey, I can honestly say, my life has been easy. I did not grow up in luxury, but I also did not have the experiences that would cripple most, and send many into apathy or worse. But she kept pushing forward. As an entrepreneur. And a social activist. Because she had to. I so admire that.

I can't really describe my emotions after reading this book (twice, already said that) but I can say that if you're thinking about being in the modern world of community acupuncture, you really, seriously, need to read this book. Twice. At least. I don't think anybody else is going to tell you the truth about what it takes. And who got it there.

Acupuncture Points Are Holes a Case Study in Social Entrepreneurship eBook Lisa Rohleder Reviews

It’s a window into the culture of community acupuncture from the perspective of its most prominent leader. Like in Lisa’s other books, she doesn’t hold back much, and here she opens the flood gates. She goes into her own troubled personal history and ties it into how it shaped her as an entrepreneur and a leader of the community acupuncture movement. The book is at times a response to her critics with lots of anger and passion to go with it. There is a lot of useful information for those wanting to learn more about community acupuncture and it’s history, and its done by following Lisa’s life struggles and lessons she learned along the way. Don’t expect a cheerful self help book. Lisa isn’t going out of her way to make the reader feel comfortable as she describes her traumatic past and her uncomfortable realizations about how healthcare and acupuncture is practiced today in the US. She does offer hope by passionately advocating community acupuncture as a tried and tested model to provide effective healthcare to many underserved people.
"Acupuncture Points are Holes" is not merely a well written text book for students and practitioners of acupuncture seeking to maximize social capital, it is an invitation to build a better world now, without waiting for idealists or politicians to make it happen in some utopian future. For many, myself included, it will challenge one to reexamine the socioeconomic and class assumptions of the dominant capitalist society. For a world that often pretends that class (and race) do not exist, this read will open your eyes. Drawing upon the inspiring, transformational story of the author it lays bare those assumptions and unveils a solution in progress.
The short review read this! You will be inspired, moved, provoked, relieved, learn about building social movements, and be excited--despite maybe also being terrified--to get your own passion into action. If you are an acupuncture student, or better yet, just entertaining the idea of being one, it's a must. This is the underground book that you will likely never be assigned in acu school but you will be glad you read it. Some of it may be itchingly uncomfortable but will make complete sense when you are in front of the actual human beings that are your patients. The writing will hook you, the story will inspire you, the thorny topics of the white-washing of acupuncture history in the US and the need for more trauma-informed care may surprise you, and the ideas will make you a better practitioner no matter what you decide to do.

(full disclosure I've been actively motivated by Lisa's clear, honest writing and unrelenting drive for over 10 years. I've made a successful living exclusively from practicing community acupuncture based on the open sharing of these ideas and it is a great, expanding joy!)

Now, if you want to know more, I'm going to gush!
The refreshing personal honesty and incisive exploration of social entrepreneurship in this book make it a must read for anyone thinking of starting a community business, and, of course, for potential and current acupuncture students, who by definition must become entrepreneurs. This the grit behind the glory (if there is any glory beyond the inherent rewards of meaningful, sustaining work). There is no guru in this story, no links to expensive motivational seminars or bulleted lists for easy-does-it business building. This a real story about a real person, the origins of the community acupuncture business model and the movement built around it, some pearls of wisdom, and important questions about healthcare, profit and how to re-imagine capitalism.

Owning any business is so hard, but the motivation needed to work in small healthcare businesses dedicated to addressing the needs of the non-1% masses and the truly marginalized in our societies needs to be rock solid. This book explores the origins of this motivation, the raw need to access the strengths and solidarity of people working together to survive and thrive, create systems that work, ask the hard questions, and help provide real access to healthcare for more of our communities. It highlights an enormous love and respect for those she recognizes as mutual partners (patients! practitioners! communities!) to create a way when there was no way, to recognize people too often left out, to hold a healthcare profession accountable to the people it is meant to be helping, based on the simple idea that we all deserve respectful care and sustainable economies. Millions of treatments per year in community clinics around the country and world are the simple yet life-changing reward.
